¡Ay Caramba!

I believe “once an Ironman, always an Ironman” but I confess I consider myself a “former triathlete”. It’s been over 2 years since I’ve done a tri, and in that time I’ve done one marathon, one 10k, and one 5k. Not exactly a busy schedule. The truth is that if I don’t have something terrifying on the calendar, I won’t train for anything. I figured the only way to get back into things was to put something scary out there, and what’s scarier than an Ironman? (OK, 50 & 100 mile runs are scarier but I ain’t stupid.)

Scheduling and location quickly narrowed things down to two choices: Arizona and Cozumel. This is the chart I made to help make my decision (this was made a few weeks ago before I knew who was signed up for what):

Truthfully, I was leaning towards Arizona. I’ve been there so many times spectating already, it just seemed like I should actually do the race sometime. Plus, the logistics are so much easier. But then I checked Ken Glah’s website and saw that he was sold out of slots. Then a funny thing happened: I just kind of said “oh, I guess I’m doing Cozumel” and registered. It happened pretty quickly, and I’m still not quite sure I did a smart thing.

My official race training begins August 1st (four months of builds), but I need to do some SERIOUS base training before then. So there goes 2013.
